Rejoicing in Hope: Seven Months of Exciting Ministry
|
 |
| Dr. Brian and Pat Green - TN, 2010 |
The summer months were filled with family and friends. Seeing God work in and through loved ones reminds us of the Blessed Hope. One of the great joys of the new ministry that God has given us is to encourage and be encouraged by friends from around the world. In April, I presented a workshop at a conference in Powell, TN. There, we spent time with Dr. Brian Green and his wife Pat. We have been with them in conferences in Europe, the Caribbean and in July, in Alaska! Becky and I will be with them again in London on our upcoming missions trip to Zambia. From Powell, I traveled to Johnson City to be with Pastor Dale Cunningham for Sunday services, then on to Morgantown, WV, for the Three Rivers Regional FBFI with Dr. Bennie Moran.
On May 1, at the Wild's Spring Board Meeting, I attended the dedication of the beautiful store that is a centerpiece of the campsite. On the 8th, Becky spoke at a Mother/ Daughter Banquet at Lighthouse Baptist in Dawsonville, GA.
In mid-May, Brenda, Becky and I traveled to Sellersville, PA for the 5th Anniversary of Rob and Rochelle Campbell at Bethel Baptist Church. Then, we enjoyed a restful week at a Time Share in the Poconos, just one hour from our daughter Debbie, and family. The time with the grandkids was wonderful--pizza, baseball games, lots of fun.
The FBFI Annual Fellowship was held in mid-June at Tri-City Baptist Church in Westminster, CO, on the theme, "The Blessed Hope." It was one of the most encouraging meetings ever, with Dr. Craig Hartman and others bringing powerful messages on the imminent return of Christ.
In late June, grandson Silas came for his second year at horsemanship camp. This time, Becky joined him and also learned to ride. In July, we were blessed with more time with the grandkids, with Sarah Mac and Debbie's kids all here at the same time.
Late July took me to New England for a visit with John and Jake, who have since moved to California. While in New England, I preached at Trinity Baptist in Concord, NH, Cornerstone Baptist in Scarborough, ME, and Heritage Baptist in Salem, NH. At Trinity, I saw John and Leetha Tachick, the daughter and son-in-law of Earl and Joan Barnett. The Barnetts were in Powell with Brian and Pat Green.
Then, the Barnetts, Greens, and I were together again at the Alaska Regional FBFI, at Immanuel Baptist in Palmer, AK. I got back in time to participate in the very precious wedding of my assistant, Joy to Brian Collins, who will complete his PhD in May (see note below).
August went by with non-stop travel and ministry in Guam, Saipan, Yap, and Australia. We saw several people saved, missionaries encouraged, and churches and schools strengthened.
The Lord gave us opportunities to minister to several servants of the Lord struggling with health problems.
September and October brought ministry closer to home with chaplains' graduations at Fort Jackson, SC, a conference for the North Carolina Sheriffs' Chaplains' Association, and a return trip to Friendship Baptist in Iowa for the church's 30th Anniversary. Pastor Terry Hamilton's son, Seth, was one of the graduating chaplains at Fort Jackson.
We had a surprise visit from Gary and Dara Lapprich, from Saginaw, MI. Gary led me to Christ when we were in the Air Force, serving in Thailand. I spoke at the Annual Convention of the American Council of Christian Churches in Hanover, PA. This fundamental group was the endorser for the only chaplain to lose his life in combat since Vietnam (see ACCC resolution 10-2). While in PA, I had a new challenge to my health, which I'll mention in the health update to follow.

Patient in Tribulation: Another All Too Familiar Health Update
|
If you have been following our health updates on the website, you know that I had a surgery in early June, then another back surgery in late June. My recovery has slowed me down a bit, but I have been working in some rest and relaxation on my travels. Honestly, the times of rejoicing with family and friends (reported above) have been very therapeutic. In PA a couple weeks ago, I experienced an onset of double vision that required an afternoon and evening in the Harrisburg ER, then a few doctors' visits when I got home. They told me, "You have 'diplopia.'" Imagine my relief when I looked it up in the dictionary and learned that "diplopia" means "double-vision." Just to be sure, I checked it twice--once with each eye. It seems to be getting better and the doctors expect it to go away in four to six weeks.
Brenda has had her lab work and ultrasound studies for her upcoming visit to the Gastroenterologist on November 22. She has some new medical equipment to promote circulation in her feet and legs, and the nurse continues to visit her at home twice a week. We will post updates on this visit and any new developments on our website. The dear people of Faith Baptist Church continue to lighten her load and bring meals twice a week. (With these banquets twice a week, it's a wonder we're all not seeing double.)
Becky is doing well and getting excited about our trip to Zambia at Thanksgiving time. She has wanted to go back since her first visit there in 2004, and she stayed out of grad school this semester so she would be able to go without pressure. We are resting in London on the way over and taking extra days of rest on the return. Having seen our dear friends, the Greens, from coast to coast here in the US this year, we are excited about seeing them at their home base at the Calvary Free Grace Baptist Church in London.

Continuing instant in prayer: Urgent Prayer Requests
|
Pray for the Accessible Tour to Israel right after Christmas. Becky and I decided not to go on this tour so we could focus on our ministry in Zambia before that trip. Becky believed that two overseas trips that close would be a hardship on her, and I now realize it would have been for me as well. Dr. Craig Hartman is leading the tour. Thank you to those who gave so sacrificially to make this trip possible for Terry and Sandy Washer, Clare and Linda Baughman, and Tadd Hamblen. This is the opportunity of a lifetime for them. However, the trip is still on by faith. Well past the deadlines, one couple had to drop out for unavoidable reasons leaving the remaining group below the minimum to make the trip financially workable for the rest. We need to pray in another couple who are ready to go, or at the least, to pray in enough funding to make up the difference. There are lots of extra expenses for a trip like this, so this is critical.
Pray for the trip to Zambia. Becky and I have had our shots and have most of the funds necessary for travel but need to see the remainder come in in the next two weeks. We were praying for a replacement for her manual wheelchair before the trip and found one on e-bay for a fraction of the cost! We are saving our insurance to replace her big power chair in the next few months. Pray that we will be safe and stay well. Pray for Brenda as we are away.
Pray for Becky as she gets back in grad school next semester and for me as I finish my dissertation on "The Extension of Local Church Ministry through Military and Law Enforcement Chaplaincy." There is a four-day revival this week with Pastor Andy Dean in Weare, NH, and the trip to Zambia, then the calendar is practically open until the dissertation draft is finished.
(Note: And pray for Joy who is now helping with two dissertations!) |

Duncan and Meg Johnson

Assistant's note: Upon learning that Duncan's grandfather had passed away, Dr. Vaughn asked me to check with the Johnsons to see if they could use some of JCV's frequent flier miles to help with their tickets to the funeral (he didn't realize at the time that not only are the Johnsons dear friends but also neighbors to my husband and me). Between the Johnsons' funds and JCV's frequent flier miles, tickets were hurriedly bought, and they departed for the funeral. Meanwhile, Dr. Vaughn experienced a health challenge which delayed his return from PA overnight. His resumed flight the next day and the Johnsons' flight itinerary "happened" to put them all in the Detroit airport at the same time. They were able to share fellowship and coffee before Dr. Vaughn headed back home and the Johnsons headed on to the rest of their trip. God works details out like that!

Becky speaking with Delta personnel - GSP Airport
|
 |
Becky had a special opportunity to speak with some of the airline personnel at the GSP airport. They have come to recognize Becky through her frequent travels and asked her if she could share with them how they could better assist people with disabilities. Becky was able to give them some ideas and share her testimony with them.
