Help and Hope...

Thanks for the cards, letters, and prayers. Brenda has been enjoying her e-mail ministry, and I have depended on her to keep friends up to date, as it has been a few weeks since we updated the website. New pictures, links, and announcements are now available.
  • I've been joking about raising support and going into full time surgery. My shoulder is doing well after three months of physical therapy following rotator cuff surgery. The problem causing my leg surgery last summer returned, resulting in another surgery on March 30th.  I will have yet another back surgery to relieve pressure on that leg nerve on May 25th. I was whining the other day about all my surgeries, when I suddenly realized I was talking to Becky. She smiled and patted me on the head.
  • Brenda is back on an every three month testing cycle of blood tests and ultrasound studies. Her next visit with Dr. Suzy Kim, her Gastroenterologist, is on May 27th. She still receives weekly wound care, with alternating weekly visits to the clinic or nursing care here at home.
  • The Lord is giving us strength for each day and we are rejoicing in His care.

Encouraging Those Who Care for Others© Steve Hicks and PV

On our last update (January), I was off to the Seattle area. We had a wonderful men's retreat there at Camp Arnold, in the foothills of Mt. Ranier. Sunday services at Galilee Baptist with Pastor Steve Hicks were a great blessing, as always. In early February, I was in Atlanta for a Valentine's banquet and Sunday services with Pastor Cary Grant at Refuge Baptist. Then, Brenda and I went to Myrtle Beach to be with Pastor Carl Wood for another Valentine's banquet and Sunday services at Anchor Baptist. I was stationed at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base when I was TDY to Thailand, where I got saved. We really enjoyed going down "memory lane" there after many years. On this visit, it actually snowed on the beach!

Also, in February, we had an extended FBFI Winter Board Meeting in Atlanta and from there a group of pastors and wives left to meet Craig Hartman and other pastors and wives for our trip to Israel. There were forty pastors and wives total (pictures here). Our guide was the well known Arie bar-David, who has been called "the most sought after guide in Israel." He is an amazing man--tank commander in three wars, classically trained musician (double bass and conductor), master carpenter, Bible scholar, and tender-hearted Christian. Also, he is the father of Naomi, whom we have dubbed "the most sought after guide in Israel who is also a precious Christian young lady." (She and Becky are the same age.) Naomi will be our guide on the upcoming Accessible Tour to Israel and the "Open" Study Tour on May 16-28, 2011. She, like her father, is an incredible guide. I'm sure you've heard us say this about previous trips we've taken, but the February trip was the best yet! (I fully expect to say that again about the December/January trip.) Deposits are due soon for the December trip, so sign up right away.

Some years ago, friends gave us a Time Share in Myrtle Beach. While we were in the area in January, we decided we needed to go and use the Time Share. We have taken many trips over the years, but very few just for relaxation together. Brenda and I had a wonderful time there in early March. We just rested and talked-what an encouragement! We came home early since Becky was home with a volunteer helper and I was off to Iowa for a banquet and the ordination of two young men at Friendship Baptist. The rest of March was filled with phone calls, desk work, doctors' visits and surgery. April included conferences in Tennessee and West Virginia, with many miles of driving through the mountains adorned with blooming dogwoods and red buds. What a setting for nearly 12 hours on the phone encouraging pastors. Beautiful!

While I was traveling, Becky and Joy made a trip to Denver, where Becky spoke at a Mother/Daughter luncheon, then gave her DVD presentation to a combined adult Sunday School class at Highlands Baptist. She has just finished her second semester of graduate work at BJU and will speak on May 8-9 at another Mother/Daughter banquet and Sunday School at Lighthouse Baptist in Dawsonville, GA. I'll preach the morning service. The following week, Brenda, Becky and I are headed to Sellersville, PA for Pastor Appreciation Day at Bethel Baptist on May 16th, which is Pastor Rob Campbell's fifth anniversary. Then we will have a few days with our daughter Debbie's family in New Jersey. This will be a slow trip so Brenda can have lots of rest in route. Please pray for strength for her to enjoy the grandkids.

Upcoming summer ministry can be found on our website, under the "Itinerary" tab. We'll be back in Denver (Annual FBFI), then in New Hampshire, Maine, and Alaska in late July. On July 31, my administrative assistant, Joy Washer will be getting married, and we can't miss that! August is filled with overseas ministry: Guam, Yap, Saipan, and Australia, Lord willing. Our dear friends, Pastor Glenn Matthews, his wife Erin, and daughter Olivia are shown to the right. Erin is undergoing chemotherapy and needs prayer. There are other meetings in 2010, but we are keeping blocks of time open for work on a dissertation (the final phase of a degree I started in 1994!).

Often I am asked by friends, "Are you doing any preaching?" since my transition from the pastorate. The answer is, "Yes, more than ever!" We praise the Lord for so many opportunities to serve, for the important work of producing FrontLine magazine, and serving the FBFI. One of the most fulfilling parts of what we are doing now is personal evangelism. Through traveling, and spending less hurried time with individuals, the opportunities to present the gospel to people one on one have greatly multiplied. We are seeing souls saved, Christians built up in the faith, and hurting people encouraged. These are the purposes of the John C. Vaughn Evangelistic Association: Evangelism, Edification, and Encouragement. By God's grace, and with your help, these three things are getting done.
Your Help Gives Us Hope!

Help through Prayer - We are well aware that the amount of work that is getting done could never be done without divine enabling in answer to much prayer. Over the years, we have been told many times, usually when going through some crisis, "We are praying for you." We have depended on it, and we are depending on it still. Pray for me to have continued strength to fulfill my calling and to help Brenda and Becky with their needs. I could not do either without the prayer and sacrificial support of others. Pray for Brenda as she rests in God's love for the very different assignment God has given her now from what she managed as a busy pastor's wife, mother of five, and caregiver for our parents for many years. Pray for Becky as she continues her education and conducts an expanding ministry of encouragement to ladies and girls.

Help through Support - There is no way to adequately thank those who provide meals, practical help, attendant care, an abundance of love, and financial support. God is using you more than you realize. Thanks to those who offer ministry opportunities.

With deep appreciation for your friendship,

John, Brenda, and Becky Vaughn
