Vaughn and his wife Carol have launched a ministry of encouragement for all who care for others: pastors, missionaries, chaplains, educators, and everyone involved in helping those who serve others. For many years, Dr. Vaughn has been involved in chaplaincy as an author, law enforcement chaplain, and endorser for military chaplains, Recently, he completed a lengthy intensive residency in Clinical Pastoral Education at the Greenville Memorial Hospital, serving as the Emergency Room Trauma Chaplain. Now, fully certified as an ACPE (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education) chaplain, he is writing books and articles on chaplaincy and taking leadership of the International Conference of Evangelical Chaplains Endorsers, an agency he helped to found years ago. The purpose of the John C. Vaughn Evangelistic Association, Inc. (JCVEA) is spreading the Gospel by “Encouraging Those Who Care for Others©.” In essence, Dr. Vaughn is a chaplain to those who care for others. The Vaughns—a widowed pastor now married to a pastor’s widow—are unusually qualified for this joint venture of spreading the Word around the world, in person and in print. Between them, they share a total of 80 years of marriage, 75 years of ministry, 8 children (one in heaven since 2008) and 15 grandchildren! Dr. Vaughn has preached in 49 states and 64 foreign countries, in churches, colleges, camps and conferences. For over thirty years he taught the Bible on his daily radio broadcast Foundations of Faith. Today thousands of his sermons and videos are downloaded every month from sermonaudio.com. Carol Vaughn taught English for over twenty-five years and completed a master’s thesis at the University of Connecticut with a focus on gifted studies. She finished her teaching career as the Fulton County Schools’ Career Advisor for the Gifted Internship Program in Georgia, where she also wrote and edited curriculum for gifted learners. Like Dr. Vaughn, while serving others, she was the primary caregiver for her late spouse who succumbed to ALS (Lou Gerhig’s disease) in 2012. Dr. Vaughn is the president of the John C. Vaughn Evangelistic Association, Inc., the parent ministry of Frontline Clubs International, a uniformed, graded youth discipleship program for Bible-believing churches to help a new generation in “Learning to love and live the Bible.” In addition to his extensive evangelistic and writing ministry, Dr. Vaughn is the Pastor Emeritus of Faith Baptist Church in Taylors, SC, where he served as Senior Pastor for 30 years. From humble beginnings in a small metal building, the 1200-member Faith Baptist Church and Hidden Treasure Christian School (for children with special needs) now share a beautiful 36-acre campus. As well, Dr. Vaughn is the past president of the Foundations Baptist Fellowship International (FBFI), where he served as the editor of FrontLine magazine and endorser of the approximately 60 military and community chaplains. His articles appear in Christian publications, such as Faith for the Family, FrontLine, Today’s Christian Preacher, and others. He has served as the Senior Chaplain of the Greenville Police Department since 1987 (now as Chaplain Emeritus), as President of the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools from 1988-2005, and on the board of Bob Jones University from 2003-2019. He serves on the boards of The Wilds, International Baptist Missions, and Mission Gospel Ministries International. In 2005, he accepted a gubernatorial appointment to serve a four-year term on the Commission of the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, serving over 29,000 South Carolinians with disabilities. Having attended Cumberland College and the University of South Carolina, Dr. Vaughn graduated from Bob Jones University in 1977. In 1989, he received the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from BJU, completed the Master of Ministry degree in 1991, and in 2006 was honored as the BJU Alumnus of the Year. In 2011, he completed the Doctor of Pastoral Theology degree with a dissertation on "The Extension of Local Church Ministry through Military and Law Enforcement Chaplaincy." In 1978, Dr. Vaughn and his late wife Brenda co-authored More Precious Than Gold: The Fiery Trial of a Family’s Faith, a best-selling book which tells the story of a fire in the Vaughn home in which Brenda and daughter Becky were severely burned. On September 2, 2013, the Lord took Brenda home as a result of complications from her injuries in the fire. Becky has taken up her mother’s mantle by encouraging others in need through counseling, speaking, and writing. She recently completed her book No Greater Love, which brings the story of the fire up to date and recounts how her own life is dedicated to honoring the Lord by honoring her mother who, by going into the fire to save Becky, exemplified the truth of John 15:13, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” She serves as a board approved missionary under JCVEA. |
